About the Role
The MRI Technologist works within the Department of Diagnostic Imaging, performing MRI examinations following protocols under the direct or indirect supervision of the Clinical Supervisor, Lead Technologist, Radiologists, Residents, or Clinical Physicians. Technologists care for infant, pediatric, adult, and geriatric patients and help build a collaborative environment that integrates education, research, and clinical leadership. This is a relief/flex (AFSCME union-represented) position with a variable schedule across the Marquam Hill, South Waterfront, and Beaverton locations.
Responsibilities
Produce high-quality diagnostic MRI studies with accuracy and efficiency, positioning patients with a high regard for safety, care, and comfort. Prescreen patients and all related personnel for MRI compatibility before entry into the static magnetic field, consulting a radiologist when questions arise, and understand implant compatibility differences between field strengths. Apply MR physics knowledge to adjust imaging parameters case by case, interpret normal cross-sectional anatomy, and determine study completeness and quality when working independently of a radiologist. Start IVs and inject contrast using sterile technique and prescribed dosages.
Documentation duties include verifying orders, correctly identifying patients under the Imaging Patient Identification Policy, labeling images completely, following radiologist and scanner protocols, completing exams with correct billing, and verifying that images reach PACS. Technologists adhere to Joint Commission National Patient Safety Goals, follow universal precautions, maintain a clean and safe work environment, and stay current on new MRI technology, hardware, and software upgrades.
Qualifications
Graduate of an approved MRI course that meets current qualifications to sit for the ARRT (MR) board exam upon hire. ARRT (MR) or ARMRIT certification required within 6 months of hire. Oregon Board of Medical Imaging license required. BLS (RQI) completed during new-hire orientation. Strong knowledge of cross-sectional anatomy, sound independent judgment, and general computer skills are expected. Preferred: a formal training program including at least 6 months of full-time clinical MRI experience, Level I/II trauma center experience, and 1 year of dedicated MRI technologist experience.
Compensation
$51.18 – $70.24 per hour, with offer based on experience, education, and internal equity. This flex position has no guaranteed schedule or hours and is not benefits-eligible. The work involves a busy environment with frequent interruptions, multiple demands, and continuous interaction with patients and medical professionals.
